In Tuesday's Budget Savvy Tidbit Newsletter, we promoted popcorn as a healthy and inexpensive alternative to potato chips. When cooked from scratch, popcorn can be made for as little as $.07 a serving.

I received quite a few emails from our readers talking about how much they enjoy popcorn and how they like to prepare it. The most entertaining email I received was from my own dad. He raised concerns about his grandson living in a house that promoted the use of Tabasco and maple syrup on his beloved popcorn. I replied back assuring him that his grandson was fine and that the Tabasco and maple syrup were just a few of the ideas we came up with based on recipes we found on the Internet. His grandchild would not be consuming popcorn seasoned with either hot sauce or pancake syrup.

I did confess to him that I personally love popcorn with salt and sugar. I have a weakness for sweet and salty foods. Popcorn is in fact a staple in our home. However, when Paul makes popcorn, it's not Budget Savvy. He uses at least a 1/3 stick of butter. It may not be Budget Savvy, but it is delicious and worth every calorie!
