I love shopping for groceries when I have a list prepared, the shelves are freshly stocked and I have plenty of time.

I hate it when I am in a hurry, the store is packed with people and the shelves are empty.

Last Saturday, after a very, very, very long day, I found myself standing in the checkout line at 10:00 pm. We had come home from a party and realized we didn't have enough milk to get Dante through the night.

The Safeway near our house is a beautiful, well cared for and enormous store. It's a great store. It is also very, very popular. At 10:00 pm there were six checkout stands open and a line three deep at each of them.

I stood in good company with three other sleepy-eyed parents holding diapers or some such emergency baby supply. There were a few folks doing their regular grocery shopping. However, the majority of people were out with their friends either picking up more alcohol to continue their evening or on their way home and just stopped by for a pint of ice cream.

Regardless of what they were there for, I was frustrated to have to wait so long in line so late at night. The next day when I went back to Safeway for my regular shopping trip (list in hand and plenty of time) I told the check out clerk about my experience the previous night and asked his suggestion for the best time to shop.

He said the best time, weekday or weekend, is 8:00 am. The shelves have just been restocked. There are usually just a handful of customers and you can take your time as you stroll through the store. I'm taking his suggestion to heart and will be doing my shopping at 8:00 am on Sunday. I'll bring a travel mug of coffee, our Safeway has coffee cup holders on the carts. I told you it was a great store!
