We celebrated two very happy events this past week. Paul and I hosted New Year's Eve at our house. It was a more intimate affair than our normal New Year's Eve parties which was exactly what we needed. The last two months have been so frenetic that quietly spending the evening with our very close friends was a pleasure!

The other exciting and happy event to take place this week was Dante's first birthday party! We held it at Fearless Fitness (our martial arts school). My mom cooked linguica and my father-in-law, Paul Sr., cooked meatballs. The food was delicious!

As you may be able to tell from the picture, pirates were the theme of the party. Paul and I had grand plans for making "skull and cross bone" cupcakes. I made 48 cupcakes (2 boxes of Duncan Hines cake mix on sale for $1 each: can't beat that!). Unfortunately, we ran out of time and the icing we made to decorate the cupcakes did not cooperate. We did get one good skull and cross bone though which Dante enjoyed destroying after I helped him blow out the candle.

Lesson learned on the cupcakes, no matter how tired you are, decorate them the night before!
