Spending Less Than I Make |

I had to make a tough decision this morning. For months I have had plans to go with my friends to the Dickens Christmas Faire today. It is an annual event that I look forward to. It is basically a Renaissance faire set during the time of Charles Dickens and is a perfect catalyst to put you in the holiday spirit. This morning I made the tough decision not to go. The battery died in Paul's car on Friday. We were able to have a new one put in yesterday. When I dropped Paul off to pick it up just before 5pm, they charged him $160 for the parts and service. The car is under warranty so I have to call on Monday and ask them to reimburse us. In the meantime, that puts us to close to the edge of our finances until our next pay period on the 15th. I could easily pull the money from savings or pull from next week's check, but I don't want to. The golden rule of finance is to spend less than you make. Occasionally, you have to make sacrifices in order to do that and today is my sacrifice. Actually, sacrifice isn't the right word. I would much rather skip this event and know that I am not putting us in a potential financial bind next pay period. As much as I am bummed to miss the event and more importantly, the time with my friends, I feel pretty darned good about my decision. On the bright side, this will only add to my anticipation of going to the Dickens Christmas Faire next year.
