I officially started Christmas shopping this weekend. I picked up my first gift, on sale, in Target's toy section. My nine year old nephew Jacob is the easiest person to shop for. I firmly believe holiday gift giving was created with nine year old boys in mind.

My eleven year old niece Chloe will be easy to buy for as well. With the exception of Dante, the majority of the other folks on my list are a whole different story. That is one of the many reasons why I like to start shopping so early: to give myself plenty of time to shop for those hard to buy for people.

I also like to start early so I can spread the cost of my holiday shopping over as many months as possible.

If I have a particular gift in mind for someone, I can keep an eye on the sales ads and potentially purchase it for less.

Starting early also allows me to enjoy my shopping instead of it being a mad, hurried rush in the last days of December.

If I wait until those last days of December, shopping gets much more expensive as I end up spending so much more out of desperation.

When I buy out of desperation, I spend more but am less satisfied with my purchases. It has the potential to become a viscous cycle.

Starting my shopping in August or September doesn't mean that I won't be scrambling for a few last minute gifts. I reserve the right to complain about that last minute scramble on this blog. Consider yourself warned.

Even though I did start my holiday shopping this weekend, I still find it irritating that I found two aisles filled with Christmas cards and decorations next to the Halloween aisles: the Halloween aisles that have been up since August 1st.
