Pinching Pennies in the Powder Room

A little knowledge
and ingenuity helps your dollar go a lot farther. Try one or more of our tips to save money on your beauty needs.

  • If your hair is on the dry side, add olive oil to the ends and let sit for an hour. Shampoo thoroughly.
  • For dry nails, rub warmed olive oil into your cuticles and gently push them back.  A little goes a long way, so use sparingly.
  • Do you have a bottle of conditioner that doesn’t work for your hair but you don’t want to throw it out?  Use it as shaving cream.
  • Witch Hazel makes an excellent facial astringent.  It’s inexpensive and free of additives.
  • Invest in your makeup brushes.  The better brushes you have the smoother your makeup will go on.  This allows you to use the most inexpensive cosmetic that much easier.
  • If you purchase all of your makeup products from the department store, give drugstore products a chance.  Many of the inexpensive brands are owned by the more expensive ones such as L’Oreal and Lancome.
  • For years, Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara has been the choice of professional makeup artists.  At $4.75, you can’t beat it.
  • If you are leery of purchasing drug store cosmetics, shop at Rite Aid.  They allow you to return items for a full refund if you are not satisfied.
  • For an inexpensive and effective body moisturizer, apply baby oil on damp skin just as you get out of the shower.
  • Head to the dermatologist, not the makeup counter for skin care advice.
