Over the weekend, I almost fell into a costly trap. The past few days, I’ve had a terrible time with my skin. It has been dry and irritable. I use a skin cleanser and astringent from Preston Wynne and am normally very pleased with the results. Their products are one of my extravagances.

At first, I thought it was a post-labor issue. Then I realized it was a “winter skin” issue. I have been home with the baby for three weeks straight. Running the heater 24 hours a day has taken its toll. I was ready to head to the drug store to invest in some new skin care products. Luckily, I decided to do a little research first.

The advice I found for dry, irritated “winter skin”:

* Temporarily stop using astringent
* Temporarily stop using products with alpha-hydroxy acids
* Use warm, not hot water on your face
* Apply moisturizer within minutes of washing face

I followed the instructions above and went back to using Cetaphil cleanser and moisturizer, which I already had in the house. I also stopped using powder. Within 24 hours my skin was back to normal.

Once the weather is a little more hospitable, I’ll go back to using the Preston Wynne products, but for now I will happily use my Cetaphil products.

The lesson I learned is to not rush out and buy a bunch of products at the first sign of trouble. By taking the time to think about why things changed and do a little research, I saved anywhere from $30 - $50 as well as wear and tear on my skin!
