I’m Budget Savvy!

The “I’m Budget Savvy” column features stories from inspiring women who are imaginative and resourceful.

I've always been frugal, but ever since my husband was permanently disabled three years ago, I've really kicked the savings into high gear. I've written three e-books about it at my website, The Discount Diva and won Bankrate's Frugal Sense contest in August 2006.

My best find recently was a gorgeous, curvy frame, 44"w X 34"h mirror that I found during Clean Up Week, also known as "trash" week. We all know that someone's trash is another person's treasure. All it took was some elbow grease, since it was extremely dirty, as if it had been in someone's attic for years. A similar mirror at a furniture store sold for $735!!!

Also, I just purchased a new living room couch at less than half price. I informed the salesman that I knew the markup on furniture is 300%, and asked what kind of deal could he offer? He hemmed and hawed and checked on the computer and finally gave me a great price. This is our first matching set of furniture in over eight years! I'd purchased the loveseat back in May, when the store had a cash and carry sale.

Whether scrounging garage sales or driving a hard bargain at a store, being budget savvy has always been part of my everyday life.

Are you Budget Savvy? Have you beautifully decorated your home with items scavenged at thrift stores and flea markets? Do you often get compliments on your wardrobe and smile to yourself knowing the majority of it was picked up second-hand or at deep discount?
