It seems almost sacrilegious to talk about returns on the day before Christmas. But over the course of the last few months, I have become very good at it. And since, in just three days time, the world will converge on the malls with unwanted gifts in hand, I thought it might be a timely subject.

Paul and I are blessed to be surrounded by the most wonderful friends and family – all of whom are as excited about the imminent arrival of our baby as we are. Over the course of the last few months, we have been given five baby showers. As you can imagine, there have been many duplicate gifts.

Normally, I loathe returning items. As budget savvy as I claim to be, I would let an item sit in my closet for a year or two, then donate it to the thrift store before returning. Not a smart move. For some ridiculous reason, I always had a sense of guilt for returning an item. I felt that the store must think I was somehow trying to deceive them by bringing the item back.

Over the course of the last four trips to Babies R Us and about the same amount to Target, I have come to realize that the folks behind the counter could care less that I am returning an item. If I am investing my money in something, or someone has invested there money as a gift to me, I should get what I want.

This has been an excellent lesson for me and I will no longer have guilt packages in the back of my closet waiting for an appropriate time to pass before handing them off to Goodwill.
