Last week, I took a cooking class at our local Whole Foods Market. The class was Knife Skills 101. The $32 enrollment fee included the two hour class, wine consumed throughout the evening (which I thought was really funny since we were all brandishing sharp objects) and a light dinner which we prepared.

It was so worth the time and money! I consider myself a decent cook. However, the skills I learned in that class will make me a much more efficient cook.

In the next few months, I hope to spend a day in the kitchen with my grandmother. I have her recipe for Portuguese Sweet Bread, but like any recipe, I know there are tips and tricks which aren’t written down. I have many wonderful memories of watching her knead the dough in an enormous metal bowl. During the winter, she would set the dough to rise next to an open oven with the heat on low.

I know so many good cooks. I plan to spend time with my mother-in-law to get the lowdown on her wicked béarnaise sauce. I must figure out why my father-in-law’s meatballs are so fantastic. Most importantly, I need to spend time with Budget Savvy food columnist Mark Parker to figure out his secret to the perfect chocolate chip cookies. I’ll also keep my eye out for other cool classes offered by Whole Foods!
