Well Worth the Delivery Fee |

One of the concepts of money that I still struggle with is that sometimes you have to spend money to save money.
In January of this year, my husband opened his own martial arts school. On top of publishing Budget Savvy, I have been teaching classes and helping run his office. As you can imagine, our work week gets very busy. It became difficult to get to the grocery store – especially if we had full weekends planned.
We started eating out more and more since our cupboards were bare. It was easy for us to spend $100 or more a week eating out – This was NOT budget savvy.
Our local Safeway delivers groceries for a $7.99 fee. Arrogantly, I had always thought it was a waste of money. Then I realized that the real waste of money was the $100 a week we were spending eating out. If I paid just $7.99 every two weeks to have my groceries delivered, I could save $200. Arrogance can hurt your pocketbook.
On top of that, for anyone who shops at Safeway, you know that you can save $20- $30 on a large shopping spree with your Safeway Club Card (it’s like a coupon card). To give you an example, with my last purchase I spent $89 in groceries and $7.99 for the delivery fee. However, I saved $32 with my Safeway Club Card – so I ultimately saved $24.01.
This is one of the smartest moves I have made this year.
Update: In my April 25, 2006 entry I mentioned that I was transferring the money I saved with my Safeway Club Card into my savings account. In just two months I have saved $74.18.
