Buying a New Suit - In 45 Minutes or Less |

Last month I had the pleasure of giving a speech to the Marin Association of Female Executives about living the Budget Savvy life. I needed a new suit for the speech. A Budget Savvy rule that I try to abide by is that the minute you know you are going to need new clothes for an event, start shopping immediately. I had the best of intentions for buying the suit as early as possible, but I just couldn't seem to find time to shop. A few days before the event, I was desperate.
On this particular day Dante was at Grandpa Tosetti's house and I had 45 minutes to pick out a suit, try it on and make the purchase before heading to Fearless Fitness to teach. I decided to go to Macy's. Typically, I would have monitored their ads and timed my shopping trip to coordinate with the sales. Like I already mentioned, I didn't plan this endeavor properly… but I did luck out. Macy's just happened to be having a sale on almost all of their suits.
It took me about five minutes to go through the racks and pull six suits to try on. I fell in love with one particular suit that had a military style jacket, although, admittedly, it bordered on "Sgt. Pepper". I decided not to get it because it was too trendy. I needed something a little more classic allowing me to wear it for years to come. I finally decided on a timeless Tahari suit that was on sale for $130.00.
The only drawback to the suit I picked out was that I needed a camisole. At this point, time was ticking away and my stress level started to increase. I decided to bring in a professional. I asked one of the women behind the register if she could direct me to a camisole that would work for the suit I was about to purchase. She walked me over to the lingerie department and it took her about 6.5 seconds to pick up a gorgeous camisole that worked beautifully with the suit. She then asked me if I had the right bra for the camisole. I am so glad she asked because I would have been mortified to get dressed the day of the speech and realize that my black bra showed. It took her an additional 6.5 seconds to find the right bra and I was all set.
When the day of my speech rolled around I felt so comfortable in what I was wearing that I was able to concentrate on my speech instead of my clothes. That is priceless when it comes to public speaking.
This shopping adventure was a great reminder for me that the beauty of shopping at a department store like Macy's or Nordstrom is the service and expertise of their employees.
